  • Join us in a feast to honor our Dakota and Native friends and colleagues.

Why a History Conference in 2012?

A history conference in 2012 can promote healing, education, and social justice. 2012 wil be the 150th anniversary of the 1862 Dakota War in Minnesota. This war deeply affect all Minnesotans -- both Native and non-Native. It resulted in the exile of the Dakota and the Ho-Chunk from Minnesota and further loss of Ojibwe land. The War also helped secure non-Native control of indigenous land. Native people in Minnesota continue to suffer from the devastating effects of 1862. Yet, very little is taught in our schools about what led to the war, or how it resulted in tremendous and ongoing inequities between Native and non-Native people in Minnesota. The Truth-Telling and Listening Circle is a first step towards building a just and safe society for all peoples.

Who?

You! We invited you to network with Minnesota Truth-Telling and Justice and our co-sponsors. Our group is a volunteer group of Minnesota citizens, both Native and non-Native. We are organizing a 2012 real Minnesota history conference. Our co-sponsors include a group of Dakota people from around the U.S. and the Hamline Center for Excellence in Urban Teaching. The October 3, 2009 Listening Circle and Feast is the first of four annual events leading to 2012. We hope you will join us!
